چکیده

We have detected the Sunyaev-Zel’dovich (SZ) increment at 850μm in two galaxy clusters (Cl 0016 + 16 and MS 1054.4 − 0321) using SCUBA (Sub-millimetre Common User Bolometer Array) on the James Clerk Maxwell Telescope. Fits to the isothermal β model yield a central Compton y parameter of (2.2 ± 0.7) × 10 and a central 850μm flux of ∆I0 = 2.2 ± 0.7mJy beam in Cl 0016. This can be combined with decrement measurements to infer y = (2.38± 0.34)× 10 −4 and vpec = 400± 1400 km s . In MS 1054 we find a peak 850μm flux of ∆I0 = 2.0±1.0mJy beam and y = (2.0±1.0)×10. To be successful such measurements require large chop throws and non-standard data analysis techniques. In particular, the 450μm data are used to remove atmospheric variations in the 850μm data. An explicit annular model is fit to the SCUBA difference data in order to extract the radial profile, and separately fit to the model differences to minimize the effect of correlations induced by our scanning strategy. We have demonstrated that with sufficient care, SCUBA can be used to measure the SZ increment in massive, compact galaxy clusters.

Observing the Sunyaev-Zel’dovich Effect Closer to Home

Hot gas trapped in a dark matter halo will produce a decrement in the surface brightness of the microwave background, the Sunyaev-Zel’dovich (SZ) effect. While massive clusters produce the strongest central SZ decrements, we point out that a local galaxy halo, specifically the halo of M31, may be one of the brightest integrated SZ sources in the sky. For various realistic gas distributions cons...

A study of the Sunyaev–Zel’dovich increment using archival SCUBA data

In a search for evidence of the short wavelength increment in the Sunyaev–Zel’dovich (SZ) effect, we have analyzed archival galaxy cluster data from the Sub-millimetre Common User Bolometer Array (SCUBA) on the James Clerk Maxwell Telescope, resulting in the most complete pointed survey of clusters at 850μm to date. SCUBA’s 850μm passband overlaps the peak of the SZ increment. The sample consis...

baryonic matter distribution in the large-scale structures is one of the main questions in cosmology. This distribution can provide valuable information regarding  the processes of galaxy formation and evolution. On the other hand, the missing baryon problem is still under debate. One of the most important cosmological structures for studying the rate and  the distribution of the baryons is gal...

Lensing Magnification: Implications for Counts of Submillimeter Galaxies and SZ Clusters

We study lensing magnification of source galaxies by intervening galaxy groups and clusters using a halo model approach. Halos are modeled with truncated NFW profiles with ellipticity added to their lensing potential and propagated to observable lensing statistics. The magnification probability distribution of this model compares well with numerical results from ray-tracing simulations. We appl...
